DISEASE OF THE MONTH Acute Interstitial Nephritis

Acute interstitial nephritis (AIM) is an important cause of acute renal failure. In addition, most forms of acute glomenuboncphritis associated with significant decrements in renal function exhibit inflammation within the tububointerstitium as well. In this article, we summarize the epidemiology, etiology, clinical presentation, and approach to diagnosis and treatment for AIN. In the final portion of the article, we discuss experimental work pertinent to the pathogenesis and treatment of interstitial nephritis.
